Earlier this year, we submitted Powell Design & Construction for the Federation of Master Builders Workplace Culture Award.
While we're keeping our fingers crossed for the regional awards, the application process itself proved really valuable for us – giving us a moment to reflect on what makes our workplace 'tick'.

What Makes Powell Design & Construction Different?
When we sat down to articulate our workplace culture, several key themes emerged that we think define the Powell Design & Construction experience:
- Bringing design & construction together under one roof
Unlike traditional setups where architects and builders operate very separately, our integrated approach creates a really seamless experience for clients while fostering deeper understanding between design and delivery teams.
- Creating opportunities for continuous learning
From site visits to supplier workshops, professional courses to knowledge-sharing sessions, learning is woven into our everyday operations. This keeps our team engaged and ensures we're always evolving our practices and how we work.
- Supporting a healthy work-life balance
We recognise that creativity and problem-solving flourish when people are well-rested and fulfilled. Our flexible approach to working hours, respect for studies, support for family commitments, and appreciation for downtime help maintain this balance.
- Building strong team relationships
Whether it's site lunches, celebrating project milestones, or development days, we try our best to prioritise creating opportunities for genuine connections beyond day-to-day work interactions.
- Investing in ongoing professional development
From supporting Finlay through his architectural studies to funding specialised training for our construction team, we're committed to helping each team member grow their professional capabilities.

The People Behind the Culture
While policies and practices are important, it's our incredible team with their commitment, diverse skills, knowledge, and collaborative spirit who truly bring our workplace culture to life.
We may only be a small team, but their willingness to share expertise, support each other, and pursue excellence in every project is what makes PDC special.
We're immensely proud of the environment we've created together – a place where ideas can flow, expertise is shared, and everyone's contribution is valued.
Whatever the outcome at the regional FMB awards, the process of reflecting on our culture has only helped reinforced how fortunate we are to work with such a great bunch.
