Over the years, we've designed and built cinema rooms, home gyms, and playrooms - but we recently had the pleasure of designing our first sensory room for a family home in Staffordshire.
A sensory room is a dedicated space designed to support sensory needs, providing a controlled environment where individuals can regulate sensory input. These rooms are particularly beneficial for children and adults with autism, sensory processing disorders, ADHD, or anxiety, though they can benefit anyone who needs a quiet, controlled space to decompress.
Creating an effective sensory room is quite different from our usual residential projects. It's not just about aesthetics in this case; every design decision needs to consider how it impacts sensory experience.
Lighting is perhaps the most critical element to think about here. We specified dimmable LED lighting with colour-changing capabilities, allowing the family to adjust the environment based on their needs. The positioning was carefully considered to avoid harsh shadows or glare, creating even, gentle illumination.
The room layout needed to feel safe and contained without being claustrophobic. We created distinct zones - a quiet corner with soft seating, an area for sensory equipment, and clear pathways between zones. Every surface was considered for its sensory properties, from soft wall padding to comfortable flooring suitable for sitting or lying on.
Sound control is essential. The room needs to buffer external noise while preventing sound from disturbing the rest of the house. We recommended acoustic insulation and soft furnishings that absorb rather than reflect sound.
Perhaps the most important aspect was listening to the family's specific needs. Every individual's sensory profile is different - what works for one person might not work for another. We spent time understanding what sensory inputs were helpful, what needed minimising, and how the space would actually be used day-to-day.
This project has given us valuable experience in sensory-conscious design that we can apply elsewhere - considering sensory impact in children's bedrooms, designing calming spaces for anyone dealing with anxiety, and thinking more carefully about lighting, acoustics, and textures in all our projects.
