The Outbuilding – A Multi-Functional Retreat

At the heart of this project is the bespoke outbuilding that houses three distinct zones, each carefully designed for its specific purpose:

① A Professional Home Gym
The bright, airy gym space features full-height vaulted windows that flood the area with natural light, while providing stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The clean, contemporary design includes professional-grade equipment on shock-absorbent flooring, creating an inspiring workout environment that rivals any commercial gym.

② A Practical Home Office Space
Adjacent to the gym space, the dedicated office area maintains the same light and space while providing a more focused work environment. With the large windows offering calming views that will no doubt enhance productivity.

③ An Immersive Basement Cinema
Perhaps the most striking feature of the outbuilding is the basement cinema. Descending below ground level, through the secret paneled door, this luxurious entertainment space features traditional cinema seating, atmospheric lighting, sophisticated refreshment station, and state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment.

The careful acoustic treatment ensures that sound remains contained within the space, allowing for immersive viewing experiences without disturbing the tranquility outside.

④ A Compact Bathroom
Understanding that convenience is essential in a multi-functional space, we also incorporated a compact but sophisticated bathroom that serves both the gym and office areas. The bathroom features high-end fixtures, a spacious walk-in shower, and the same premium finishes found throughout the building.

Outdoor Living at Its Finest

We also had the pleasure of working on the exterior spaces at Ashbourne Retreat, designing and creating comprehensive landscaping that has transformed the surroundings into a resort-like retreat:

① Elevated Entertaining Area
The multi-level outdoor living space features contemporary built-in seating arranged around a firepits. The minimalist design uses clean lines and natural cladded materials (that seamlessly match the exterior of the outbuilding), creating the perfect gathering area that frames the breathtaking views of the Derbyshire landscape.

② In-built Outdoor Kitchen
The outdoor kitchen combines functionality with elegant design. High-quality stainless cooking appliances work beautifully with the natural stone elements, while the thoughtful layout ensures that cooking and entertaining can happen simultaneously in this sociable space.

③ Luxury Hydropool and Sauna Installation
The incredible rectangular hydropool is positioned to maximize views, while still maintaining privacy. Its crisp edges and contemporary design make it a striking visual feature as well as a functional swimming space. Nearby, the outdoor sauna and shower facilities complete a full outdoor wellness circuit, allowing for year-round outdoor enjoyment regardless of the Derbyshire weather.

Harmonising with the Landscape

Looking at the completed project, it's remarkable how this contemporary structure complements its rural setting. The building's form takes inspiration from traditional Derbyshire barns, with a pitched roof and carefully selected materials that echo the agricultural heritage of the area.

The large expanses of glass create a dialogue between interior and exterior, while the thoughtful landscaping uses different levels and zones to create interest and define spaces. Native planting softens the edges of the hardscaping, helping the new elements blend harmoniously with the existing environment.
