Come behind the scenes with us at this recently completed bungalow extension project in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

This project started as a relatively straightforward kitchen extension brief. The clients came to us with a simple problem: they'd just purchased a recently renovated bungalow, but the kitchen was too small for how they wanted to live. The initial plan? A modest extension to create an open-plan kitchen-diner.
But as we built that relationship and gained their trust, the project began to grow organically.
A suggestion from Richard, to vault the ceiling, wasn't in the original scope - but when the clients saw the potential of that generous loft space above, everything changed!

Making the Most of Bungalow Living
One of the often-overlooked benefits of bungalows is that massive roof space. While others might see limitations in single-storey living, we see opportunity.
By vaulting the ceiling in the extension and adding apex glazing, we've transformed not just the size but the entire feel of the space. Natural light now floods in from above, creating volume and drama where there was once a standard flat ceiling.
We didn't stop there. That large loft is now fully boarded and insulated, maximising storage potential.

The Details That Matter
Preparing for the photography shoot (and making sure everything was perfect for Sunday's move-in day!), we found ourselves reflecting on the details that make this project special:
- The bespoke extractor hood with motion activation that our clients fell in love with.
- The underfloor heating that extends throughout, creating seamless comfort.
- The reconfigured bathroom allowing for that coveted walk-in shower.
- Even repurposing an old doorway in the utility as a backlit feature mirror - turning a problem into a design moment.

Sustainable Features
We're particularly proud of the sustainable elements incorporated here. Solar panels and an air source heat pump mean this home is ready for the future. The new doors with integrated electric blinds provide both shade and privacy while maintaining energy efficiency.
There is a grant available for the airspace heat pump that our clients took advantage of here, and the solar panels also benefitted from no VAT.

Returning for Phase II
The exciting part? We're not done yet! Phase II is already on the drawing board - a garden office, sauna, and complete landscape redesign.
As our clients move back in and enjoy their new spaces, it’s a great reminder that the best projects aren't always the ones that go exactly to plan. Sometimes they're the ones that evolve, grow, and surprise even us.
Stay tuned for the professional photos dropping soon!
