Life at Powell Design & Construction, and How We Invest in Our People

June 29, 2026

A business is only as strong as the people in it. Here's how we put that into practice at Powell Design & Construction.

A business is only as strong as the people in it, and that's not something we just say, it's something that shapes how we hire, how we develop people once they're here, and how often we stop to check whether we're actually getting it right.

We try to work on the business, not just in it

Most great teams are busy, and ours is no different.

There are times when we've got a lot on and the team is stretched. But that's exactly why we try to make space to step back every so often.

Every quarter, we close the office for a morning and bring the whole team together with our business coach, Christine Gilbert, to talk through how things are actually going, not just the numbers, but the people too.

In these workshops, we talk about the individual strengths each person brings to the team, how people are getting on, where trust is building across the team, and where communication could be better.

We look back at what's gone well over the past year and try to understand why, rather than putting it down to luck, and we usually come away with a few things we want to work on.

It would be easy to let that kind of reflection slip when things are busy, but it's probably exactly when it matters most.

We try to shape roles around people, not the other way round

Part of that comes down to actually noticing what someone's good at, and then doing something with it.

If someone's naturally sensitive and caring, they'll probably do their best work close to clients and project management, where that matters most. If someone's drawn to technology, we'd rather lean into that and give them the chance to learn new tools and push their skills further, instead of keeping them boxed into a fixed job description.

It means roles here don't always look exactly the way they did on paper when someone joined. We'd rather shape the role around the person than expect the person to shape themselves around the role.

We're proud of the culture we've built here, and we're commited to keep working on it.
